Frequently asked questions

Does Smalti send my code or transcripts anywhere?
No. Smalti has no server and no telemetry. It reads transcripts from your disk (or, on iOS, from your own hosts over SSH) and keeps everything it stores on the device. Network traffic comes from what you do in it: pages loaded in browser panels and commands run in terminals. See the privacy policy.
Do I need Claude Code?
Only for the session list and graph. Terminals, browsers and notes work without it. Smalti does not install, update or sign in to Claude Code, and it does not talk to Anthropic.
Does Smalti change my transcripts?
No. It only reads ~/.claude/projects. Its own files are in ~/Library/Application Support/Smalti.
Why is a terminal not linked to its session?
Smalti links a terminal to the newest session in the same working directory that was modified after claude started. A session with no messages yet has no transcript, so the link appears after the first exchange. If two claude processes start in the same directory at the same moment, they can be matched the wrong way round.
Why does the sidebar show a session as live when nothing is running?
A session counts as live for 90 seconds after its transcript last changed, so a session that just finished in another terminal app still shows a green dot briefly.
Does Smalti follow the system light or dark appearance?
No. The app is dark only. The website has a light theme.
Are programs in my terminals restored after a relaunch?
By default, no: each terminal panel starts a new shell in its last working directory, and clicking a session in the sidebar resumes it with claude --resume. With smaltid running, Detachable Terminals On (in the palette) runs agents in smaltid's terminals instead; quitting Smalti then only detaches, and the panel reattaches with its scrollback on the next launch. On iOS, terminals live in tmux on the host, so they survive too.
How do I reset the layout?
Quit Smalti and delete ~/Library/Application Support/Smalti/workspace.json. Deleting the whole folder also clears the session cache and notes created with ⇧⌘N.
When will Windows and iOS be available?
Both are in development. There are no release dates. The changelog will say when they ship.
Is Smalti open source?
The source repository is private at the moment.
